With a home draw in the opening round this season we had hopes of a similar run.
With both us and Molesey making changes to the usual starting line ups the game was a bit scrappy, with neither side assuming any degree of control. Our own plans were further disrupted when Chris Davidson sustained an early injury making way for Jordan Oldershawe within the first quarter of an hour.
With opportunities at both ends it was debutant Ashley Smith in the home goal that caught the eye in the first half, firstly with a fine double save after twenty minutes and then a well judged palm over just on half time. Frustratingly we failed to work the visitor’s keeper too much in the half, and this despite having some success down both flanks.
Shane Sinclair and Tyrone Roberts regularly having the beating of their full backs and with inviting crosses to follow time after time, it was somewhat of a mystery that no one had the desire to get themselves a simple tap in.
In the second half there was more of the same, and it has to be said that despite the energy of both sides there was little quality on show at all.
A further injury this time to the returning Matt Holley meant another change and the defensive reshuffle this time had an immediate affect, but not the one that we wanted. Clever play from the Molesey right midfielder saw him cut inside and fire low into the bottom corner of our net from outside the penalty area.
Although we continued to press, our lack of scoring opportunities was a continued source of frustration and only the most optimistic Chessington fan sensed an equalizer.
Time also was against us, and with our shape suffering because of our desperation to get back in the game we were caught again in the final minute, when a penalty awarded against us for a desperate last ditch challenge was converted to seal our fate.
