The game in the first half was played out almost entirely in midfield with neither side gaining much advantage territorially, and with the visitors working hard at their game we created very little.
A well marshalled Farnham back line and midfield dealt comfortably with what was thrown at them, and there were signs of frustration running through the team with the ball repeatedly finding its way back into our half as we struggled to gain any attacking momentum.
That said we were competing well, and our overall performance showed a considerable improvement on what had been on show just a few weeks ago and there was every reason to think that slight adjustment at half time may see us rewarded.
No doubt as thoughts turned to this we conceded. A soft goal in every sense, as the ball seemed to go through a wall of defenders taking a slight deflection, as it found its way past Sharpe and into the corner of our net.
In an average game with little of note to report on we were unfortunate to fall behind.
Immediately after the restart we were on the front foot, and our tactic of over hitting our forward passes seemed to work as we forced the visitors into taking a rearguard action.
From one such phase clever interplay between Brazil and Wickes saw the visiting keeper struggle to deal with the high cross, and Brazils close attention resulted in him hitting the post before some last ditch defending saw the ball scrambled away for a corner.
We now were enjoying our best spells in the game, and although Farnham were defending most of the time we still lacked a cutting edge to our final third play.
As the game entered its final twenty minutes and from a rare attack from the visitors the game should have been put out of reach as they were awarded a penalty. Debate ensued as to whether the foul was by Sharpe or Haywood, but in the end it didn’t matter as the kick was blazed high over the bar.
This let off re energised our efforts in the final stages, but despite gamefully trying through to the end we couldn’t find an equalizer and slumped to our seventh league defeat of the year.
