Our season took another knock on Saturday

When we came away from Champions and league leaders Guildford with a four nil defeat.

The game itself was much closer than the score line suggests, and although on the balance of play our hosts deserved the three points the margin of defeat was somewhat flattering.

In a bright opening our enthusiastic approach was reaping rewards, and the industrious Jimmy Brazil was a constant threat to the home defence.

As early as the fifth minute he should have given us the lead when his own work rate created a chance, when the goalkeeper under pressure kicked straight to him but his hurried strike sailed over the empty goal.

We continued to enjoy some good possession and were comfortably equal to a Guildford side that hadn’t really threatened in the opening exchanges, even squandering further half chances most notably one that fell to Nicky White..

On the half hour we could have fallen behind when only an offside flag saved us from going behind. Within a minute however and we clearly hadn’t learnt our lesson, when an almost identical phase of play saw a clever chipped finish past Dan Fisher in the Chessington goal to give Guildford the lead.

We responded positively and continued to cause our hosts some problems although our limited attacking options meant the home keeper had very little to do.

At the break and still only one goal in arrears, there remained the possibility that we would get something from the match.

We comfortably dealt with the all important first fifteen minutes and were possibly the better side at this stage, so much so that a change was made from a 4 5 1 to a 4 4 2 with the introduction of Ryrowski who replaced Lang.

Almost immediately however we conceded what was always going to be the decisive goal. Yet again from our own attacking position, one long clearance undone us far too easily. This even when the manager had deployed three defenders to look after the one front player who far too easily found room to slot home.

Again we regrouped and stuck at it, and created another fine opening with ten minutes remaining but with Ryrowski well placed he fired wide of the target.

As the game entered stoppage time and with our fate sealed, we sloppily conceded two more to leave us with a four goal beating when in all honesty to have been done by two would have been a fairer reflection.
