CHUFC 5 - 0 ALFOLD FC
Goals: Dylan Kitto, Curtis Ford, 2 x Kai Neil-Gray, John Fouracre
Well, we finally got a much-needed win and one which I hope kickstarts our season.
After Saturday's disappointment, I made an array of phone calls to strengthen the squad. I was able to get two of them over the line and into the starting line-up, and they made a difference. With three more to follow, hopefully, the return of at least some of the absentees and the squad depth will give me plenty of the right headaches.
The game couldn’t have started any better as from our first attack in the first minute we scored. That seemed to relax the lads a bit but perhaps their was a sense of complacency at scoring so early as I thought we allowed Alfold into the game. Some of the problems resurfaced particularly when their nippy winger got in behind a couple of times which saw us sit a bit too deep and to tuck in our wide players deeper than I would of wanted. We were the better side and had a few half chances but the game remained in the balance probably until we scored again from a corner right on half time.
If the lads thought praise was going to follow, they were perhaps woken up by Reidy's outburst about how we had got our patterns wrong and hadn’t totally dominated the game in the way we perhaps should have.
The second half we were absolutely fine but a sending-off with 30 minutes to go may have made a difference but 2 of the lads that came off the bench put paid to any thoughts of allowing our opponents back in. We were brave with how we went about it and restricted the visitors to just 1 shot on goal whilst we were down to 10.
Going forward we continued to be a threat and a well-worked goal with 15 to go gave us a lead that I was comfortable with. When we scored again just moments later it was a bonus and good to get a third player on the night scoring their first goal for the first team. The lads looked at last like they should, a well-organised side capable of beating anyone and that was evident in how they played the last 10 minutes. Another goal at the end was satisfying and we should now go into every game with the belief we have gained from this one.
