The somewhat harsher truth is that the attitude and application of the players was poor, and we were duly punished.
I suspect this performance may have seen a few slightly longer-term decisions made, as all in all both the defeat and the manner in which it happened was unacceptable.
In the first half our only effort of note came from a well-worked move, which saw Darren Smith unfortunate to see his goal bound shot bundled off the line. At the other end we were conceding too many dead ball kicks, and the left footed delivery from the right caused countless problems that we were fortunate to get away with. That was until we didn’t ,and fell behind. The only surprise was that it had taken so long to come.
At the start of the second half our response was good, and in defence of the players slightly, but only slightly, in general their overall approach was much much better. We came close early on, on a couple of occasions and to be fair an equaliser was always likely.
This duly arrived on sixty-seven minutes when Reece Jackson who had found himself free inside the box saw his well-struck shot parried into the air, for Zak Graham to volley home. Zak continuing his goal scoring run.
At this stage it seemed there was only one winner, but as so often happens we were caught with a sucker punch where without question our defending could have been better and we were behind again with just fifteen minutes to go.
As desperation crept in on our part, we completely lost any sort of shape and at times looked like a ramshackle side that had been literally thrown onto the pitch. Our saviour in part was that the visitors were equally as anxious to secure the three points, and what followed was the worst fifteen minutes of football for a long time.
Our one final moment came late on when we had a free kick that hit the wall, although there was still time for our nervy opponents to somehow muck up a three on one opportunity right at the end.
We were beaten again and despite a marginally better showing in the second half we can have no complaints.
