However the result didn’t actually tell the whole story as both sides could point to goals scoring opportunities that were not taken made up by misfortune, good goalkeeping and poor finishing.
The blustery conditions pretty much made it a game of two halves with us the dominant side in the opening 45 minutes creating chances and half chances throughout.
First to be denied was Scott Todd. Taking a free kick for a foul on himself just yards outside the penalty box he was denied by the base of the post with the home goalkeeper rooted to his starting position.
This near miss seemed to increase the belief of the players, who following three successive defeats were playing with confidence and producing a good footballing display on an excellent surface.
Next to be denied was the returning Darren Smith, latching onto a Scott Todd pass he was unfortunate to see his goal bound effort deflected just wide of the post by the outstretched leg of the keeper.
As the chances kept coming, Zak Graham was the biggest culprit, as his miss from 10 yards out should have broken the deadlock.
Whilst the mood was high at half time given our stability at the back, the energy in midfield and the chances created up front, you couldn’t help but think that we had missed a trick in not converting any of the opportunities that had come our way.
As the second half commenced it was clear to see that the pattern was changing.
Egham were now on the front foot and asking questions with virtually every attack and whilst our defence stayed firm the wave after wave of attacks were certainly challenging.
Thankfully chances were kept to a minimum as the performances of the back four of Chandler, West, Welsh and Holley were strong and that coupled with a disciplined approach all round we deserved the moments of good fortune that came our way.
We did break through once when Smith breaking from midfield had a chance to lob the goalkeeper but his goal bound attempt didn’t quite carry enough force and the keeper made a comfortable save.
As the time ticked away there were occasions where it was a case of stick or twist. The odd free kick that we were awarded presented us with a chance to deliver into the box but concern at the counter attack was uppermost in our minds and we resisted the temptation to throw too many players forward.
With no substitutions made by us fatigue was noticeable and from one laboured challenge in the last five minutes Dan Fisher made an exceptional save to secure a well-deserved point against a good Egham side.
