Great performance but still nothing

To those that are just checking in on the result , I have no doubt they will write this game off as just another defeat for us and probably incorrectly suggest that our hosts just had an off day fresh from their own 9 0 away win in the previous game .

This couldn’t be further from the truth .

We started really well without having a real opportunity , but were doing enough to prompt their management team to repeatedly cajole their side into a better performance . In truth they never really got going and my own view is that was down to us rather than them having an off day . They were always going to have a threat as they had a very good player in their prolific forward , Jack Nelson and slightly against the run of play he opened the scoring on 15 minutes . We could have done better again but it was a good finish .

The worry as has so often be the case this season is that we would totally fold , but our reaction was good and we continued to try to carry a threat . I thought we did quite well through the half and as the break approached was readying the interval chat to heap some praise on the lads for another decent showing following our midweek performance when playing with 10 men . Unfortunately another avoidable moment defensively was pounced upon and our deficit was doubled .

I continued with the praise and the noise coming from the home dressing room where it was being impressed upon our hosts that they hadnt been good enough was at least an indication that we had performed quite well .

Having been asked to go again , to play on the front foot , to be wary of the obvious threat that they carried and to minimise the avoidable mistakes the opening moments proved encouraging . That said there was still a wonder as to where the goals may come from but that was soon answered . From a drop ball in our favour on the edge of the box , an initial shot was blocked but we got to the second first and a fine pass from Ellis saw Archie finish well to set up the second half perfectly .

We had 1 moment where but for a fine save the lead would have been back to 2 but for long parts we were pushing for an equaliser . We had the ball in the net correctly ruled out for offside , had a number of corners and moments that weren’t quite the chances we were searching for , but no doubt we were the more likely . We possibly didn’t do quite enough to get a second , but theres lots a games where the final result isn’t what is deserved but we were certainly the more likely and had we equalised , im not sure anyone could have moaned . It didn’t happen and as I said at the start , a lot of outsiders will chalk it up as just another Chessington & Hook United defeat , but that wasn’t the story and I have no doubt if we retain these levels that elusive first win wont be far away .
